It happens sometimes that during updating WordPress plugins the screen is freezing! Then to find out that you can not log in again always ending up with this message:
Briefly unavailable for scheduled maintenance. Check back in a minute.
Why does this error happen?
When you go to update a plugin, WordPress puts itself in temporary maintenance mode.
The “Briefly unavailable for scheduled maintenance. Check back in a minute.” message, is a WordPress generated notification that alerts visitors about the ‘short’ unavailability of your site. This message is normal behavior.
During the update of WordPress, thjemes, plugins, etc visitors will see this message during the process, say “okay” to themselves, and hopefully refresh the page in a minute.
The error message might become persistent if for some reason the update script is interrupted (or times out).
How to fix it
When this error message is displayed you are unable to to log into the admin backend anymore with wp-admin or wp-login. WordPress has generated
.maintenance file in the root directory of the WordPress installation that when the update script completes is removed by WordPress automatically. In the case of an interruption of the update process, this file isn’t deleted and the message remains.
You need to Delete it manually with the following steps:
- Log into your web server via FTP or your web host’s control panel.*
- Locate the root of your WordPress install (this is where you’ll find folders for wp-content, wp-admin, and wp-includes)
- Look for a file called
.maintenance (in the root directory)
- Delete (or rename) it
- Refresh your WordPress site.
